Nourishing our bodies is part of being human. Creating an awareness of what we consume and why we consume it is only natural. This can happen as we learn more about ingredients and nutrients our bodies need to thrive.
When we start to obsess over what we eat, how much, and how frequently, this is the beginning of an over awareness. When it begins to affect how we see ourselves, these thought processes prevent us from getting nourishment in the frequency and amounts that we need.
It’s helpful to ask yourself these questions:
Do you find yourself going to bed feeling satisfied and nourished?
Is counting calorie intake part of your daily routine?
Do you feel it’s okay for your body’s weight and appearance to change?
Understanding that your body’s needs and appearance change is important in developing a healthy understanding of how bodies develop over the course of our lives.
Can you acknowledge that you and your friends’ bodies are different due to your genetics, childhood, and lifestyle?
We’re not all the same. In fact, we are quite different due to many factors. These influence our genes and make us who we are. Coming to an understanding and acceptance of who we are and how we are different has the ability to set us free.
However, this does not always come naturally or quickly. It takes practice for all of us. Our own strengths may lie hidden when we continue to compare our body or capabilities to those of others.
What can we do to remind ourselves that food is nourishment and how I eat is good for my body?
Talk with a trusted friend or family member about how you feel.
Make a list of your favorite foods.
Google the nutrients in your favorite foods. Example: “what nutrients do carrots have?” Doing this shows you exactly what you’re eating and tells you all the amazing things these foods are doing for your body.
Write in a journal practicing “stream of consciousness journaling.” At the end write down 5-10 recent positive things you noticed about yourself.
Food is an amazing part of our lives. We need it to survive and thrive. Remind yourself daily that how you are growing and changing is exactly what is meant for your body.
