There is a strong connection between mental health and nature. It’s long been supported by science that spending time outside every day can reduce anxiety and stress, decrease feelings of being tired and improve focus and concentration levels. On a physical level, people often experience lower blood pressure rates, less cortisol (hormone associated with stress) in the body, and more happiness-promoting endorphins.

However, there is one element of nature that is being found to have a profound effect on well-being and that is the element of water. This has opened a lot of discussion around the concept of “Blue Zones” and environments that have some sort of connection to water, were reportedly more restorative for people.

So, the question arises of how do we incorporate nature, but more specifically water, into our wellness routines? In can be as simple as walking outside and taking some deep breaths. You might even level it up and go for a walk around the block or consider visiting a park near you. Perhaps you live near a body of water, and you can go sit and/or walk near a pool, pond, lake, or coast. If the season is right, you might opt to go swimming!

However, what if you don’t live near natural water? Does this mean you are out of luck? The answer is absolutely not! Studies are showing that even the sound of water can impact our nervous system. Therefore, you might opt to play the sound of water on some headphones. You can listen to a running creek, rain drops, or ocean waves and feel yourself transported to a virtual blue zone. Maybe you have access to a fountain or want to consider investing in a small one that can be placed in your personal space. Other activities you might do include taking a shower/bath, washing your hands, watering any plants, or even washing the dishes.

Nature as a form of self-care is powerful, especially when we add the element of water. The great news is that you are not limited in how you choose to incorporate it into your daily routine!
