Spring break is around the corner and for some people this is a time to clean, organize and freshen up their space. For others, the idea of “spring cleaning” is the last thing on their mind. However, spring cleaning does offer its benefits and is even a form of self-care.

Self-care is defined as the actions you take to address your wellness and your wellness is made up of several different categories. These categories are separate but interconnected – meaning that they all contribute to a well-balanced life; if one area is neglected it will eventually impact the other areas of your wellness. One of the seven dimensions of wellness is environmental, meaning your space.
Let’s face it, life can be busy at times. It is understandable that your space, whether it’s your room, car, or even your school backpack, can become disorganized and cluttered. Nonetheless there are plenty of benefits to tidying up your space.
Increase Focus and Creativity
Clutter can be very distracting for the mind; therefore, an organized space allows you to focus on your task and increases your productivity. Think of all the time you would save if you had easier access to the items you need when you need them. Therefore, the energy spent on searching can now be spent focused on doing tasks you enjoy.
Improve Mood
Research has shown that clutter can often be the root of stress and anxiety. Our brain can become overwhelmed with the “visual noise” of cluttered spaces, and it is then connected to feelings of confusion and tension. On the flip side, clean spaces often lead to feelings of calm and balance. Plus, the literal act of cleaning and physical movement can release endorphins, which supply the brain with positive vibes to alleviate feelings of anxiety, stress, and depression.
Be Mindful and Practice Gratitude
Tidying up our space is also an opportunity to practice being present and mindful in the moment. In addition, it’s an opportunity to practice gratitude for your space and the things you have, which also elevates our mental wellness.
If this sounds like a form of self-care you are willing to try, here are a few quick tips to keep in mind. First, start small. Whether it’s your dresser in your room, the passenger seat of your car, or even your backpack, tackle one space at a time. Furthermore, set a time limit. This allows you to set a manageable goal and feel mighty accomplished once you complete that task. Finally, consider small things you can do as part of your daily routine. This makes cleaning less daunting in the future.
Cleaning doesn’t have to be your whole spring break but consider taking some time to care for your environmental well-being and you might just find that you feel less stressed and/or anxious as you go through your day!
