In the world of therapy every person and every story is unique, like a fingerprint. Think about a jigsaw puzzle. Our various backgrounds, beliefs, and experiences come together like the pieces of that puzzle to create a beautiful picture. While each piece is different, they are all integral in shaping who we are. But how does this play a role in our mental health?

Why Our Backgrounds Matter 

Think about your family, your beliefs, and where you’re from. These things build your identity and influence the way you see the world. This also means that those very things could affect how you feel and cope with challenges. Having a therapist who is able to understand your background can help you feel adequately heard.

What Happens If We Ignore Differences? 

Talking to someone who doesn’t really get you can be very tiring. It can make therapy feel like a chore instead of a safe space. When therapists are not able to consider our diverse backgrounds, they might not fully understand what is going on. They may also suggest things that would not make a good fit in our lives.

Why Embracing Our Diversity Helps

When therapists understand and appreciate the things that contribute to our uniqueness, it can feel like coming home. We feel embraced and understood. A therapist who can champion our background can also help us to decipher how to use it as a source of strength.

What to Keep In Mind As You Find Your Best Fit

Allow yourself to talk freely. It is important to tell your therapist about your culture and what you believe in. Ask questions! If something doesn’t make sense or feels difficult, ask your therapist about it. Therapists are there to help us and they will always appreciate honesty. When therapists and clients work together to embrace differences, the path to growth and healing becomes brighter and more meaningful for everyone involved.
