With the election around the corner, there is a lot of discussion around voting. While this can be an exciting milestone for many teens as they turn 18, it can be an equally disappointing time for those who desire to participate in the election process but are restricted due to age cut-offs. However, just because you may be too young to vote, it does not mean you are too young to participate in the democratic process. Here are some alternative ways you can play an active role in this year’s election.

Hold Conversation

Talk to your friends and loved ones who are old enough to vote and make sure they are registered to vote. Share what topics are important to you and listen to their thoughts. You might find that your thoughts align and, in some cases, they may differ; regardless of the opinions, seek to approach each conversation with kindness.

Volunteer

There are a lot of ways to get involved that do not require you to be 18. You can volunteer with local organizations that are advocating for issues that are close to your heart. If you are looking for more direct election opportunities, you may also consider volunteering directly for a campaign, and some states even allow poll site volunteers to be under the age of 18.

Use Platform

Even if you aren’t voting, you still have a voice. You can call, email, or write letters to your elected officials expressing your stance on certain topics that are important to you. You can post on social media. However, remember to check your sources before sharing information that may not be from a reliable source.

Elections can be challenging times for people to navigate, as it can be an emotionally charged time of year. It can be especially difficult wanting to have input and feeling like you cannot because you are legally too young. However, there are plenty of other impactful actions to minimize feeling discouraged.  These are just general ideas to help you brainstorm and find more specific opportunities available to you within your own community!
