If you have been fortunate enough to take a trip recently, you may have experienced some positive wellness benefits. There is a lot of research that suggests taking vacations and trips can improve aspects of our mental and physical health. Some studies suggest that our stress decreases, sleep improves, feelings of happiness and connection with others increase, and more.

When we travel, we often disconnect from phones and the routines of our daily lives. We become more present with our environment and curious about new things. Luckily, we don’t have to travel far to recreate some of the feelings we get while on vacation. By tapping into some basic mindfulness techniques while exploring our own backyards, we can feel like we are on elaborate retreats. Here are some ideas to experience the joy of traveling without leaving home.

  1. Be intentional.

When we are on vacation, we justify not staying connected with people as frequently via technology. This gives us space to just be without the incessant bombardment of notifications and multiple ongoing conversations. The reality is that we do not need vacations to justify this break. Give yourself permission to take time to disconnect and treat that time like a holiday. You will be surprised how your ability to tap into the present moment can improve and therefore enhance your wellbeing.

  1. Switch up your usual

Perhaps you have some routines that you enjoy. Think of ways that you can experience them slightly differently. For example, perhaps you order the same thing every time – be bold and try something different. Maybe you often drive to a place you go to, but you live close enough to walk. Take the walk and see what you discover along the way. Instead of passing by your neighborhood park, go there for a picnic, read a book, or challenge some friends to some classic card games.

  1. Find free and low-cost events

Believe it or not, many of our communities host various free and low-cost events. Often people do not know where to look to find them. Many libraries have Culture Pass programs that offer free and/or discounted rates to local museums, art galleries, zoos, and more. Check out your local botanical gardens and museums for free hours and/or pay-what-you-can days. First Fridays and Second Saturdays are another common time when establishments open for more public access. Libraries and independent bookstores may offer various workshops, trivia nights, author talks, and more.

As you can see, changing the way that we interact with our own communities and backyard establishments can change them into whole new experiences that make our mind and body feel like we’re on a little mini vacation.

Safe travels, my friend!
