The excitement of a new school year can come with a lot of pressure. New classes, homework, sports, friendships, activities, expectations, and suddenly, your calendar is full again. For some, the transition from summer freedom to a busy school routine can feel overwhelming.

That’s why it’s important to remember: being busy does not mean you have to be burned out. Burnout can look different for everyone. You might feel exhausted even after sleeping, lose motivation, become easily irritated, have trouble concentrating, or feel like everything on your to-do list is too much. These feelings are signals! Your mind and body may simply be asking for a pause.

Yoga can be a powerful tool for managing stress and preventing burnout. You don’t need an hour-long class or have to be flexible in order to try. A few minutes of movement can help you reconnect with your body after sitting in class all day. Try stretching your neck and shoulders, moving through a few gentle poses, or simply sitting quietly and focusing on your breath.

Most importantly, permit yourself to rest. Rest is not something you earn after accomplishing everything. Sleep, downtime, laughter, time with friends, creativity, and doing absolutely nothing are all important parts of taking care of yourself.

As the school year gets busy, try replacing the question “How much more can I fit into my day?” with “What will help me feel my best?” You are more than your grades, your achievements, your schedule, or your productivity. A successful school year isn’t one where you do everything. It’s one where you learn, grow, ask for help when you need it, and remember to take care of the person doing it all: you.
